Replace Google Photos Without Losing Your Memories

Private photo backup paths — from encrypted cloud to full self-host — without panic-deleting your camera roll.

Google Photos trained us to upload everything and worry about storage later. When "later" becomes a paid tier, the exit feels scary: what if I lose the kids' first steps? You will not — if you migrate in order, verify before you delete, and pick a path that matches your patience for setup.

Export before you cancel anything

Use Google Takeout for a full archive download to an external drive. iCloud users: export via Mac Photos or third-party tools. Do not free up space on the phone until you have opened the backup on a second device or browser.

Light path: encrypted hosted backup

Ente encrypts on device before upload — Google cannot train on what they cannot read. Setup is app-store simple compared to Docker. Good first move if you want privacy without running a server.

Full control path: Immich on your hardware

Immich feels closest to Google Photos when self-hosted: timeline, albums, auto-upload. Budget an afternoon and ongoing disk space. Read the setup guide on the listing before you promise the household a finished library.

Low-tech path: folders you own

Syncthing or a manual monthly copy to a hard drive works for many families. You lose fancy search; you gain simplicity and zero monthly fee. Pair with FreeFileSync for a scheduled push to a USB drive in the drawer.

Delete from the phone last

Whichever path you pick: confirm thumbnails on web/desktop, test a restore of one album, then use free-up-space. One verified backup beats three anxious partial uploads.
